Khaliyah X is a Chicago-based songstress who puts a modern spin on classic R&B sounds. Her sound is charismatic and raw. Hearing her material for the first time will make you feel warm and nostalgic. At a young age, her and her family knew she was gifted with such a voice. From talent shows to pagents, she was following the rules of a singer which made her resent her talent. Years went on and she realized that her gift had a purpose. Her music, her voice, her story was meant to be shown to the world. From blogs to interviews to performing at events, expos and venues all over Chicago. Khaliyah’s spotlight in the art industry has been shining bright. In this city, local artists support and have each others back. She’s the perfect example of that. She is the definition of a striving supporting artist. Give Khaliyah X a follow and check out her music video for her latest single “Impulses”. You’re in for a treat.
What genre would you describe yourself as? Why?
Unexpected. A lot of people when seeing me at face value, expect a certain voice type or style. My background is a little unexpected as well. I was a classical singer when i was a child. I had dreams of going to Juliard to be a musical theater major and become a huge star on broadway. It’s just always interesting how life pans out.
Who would you say are your biggest inspirations within the industry?
All for different reasons. I would say, Jhene Aiko, Brandy, Beyonce, Jill Scott, and India Arie. THE LADIES.
What was the moment you wanted to take the leap in this lifestyle?
I’ve always wanted to be involved in the industry somehow, but the moment I officially decided was when I was 7 or 8 years old.
Your lyrics are very relative, is there a certain wave or vibe you have for each song?
Wow thank you! I usually just write what I’m feeling at the moment. I always try my hardest to be as vulnerable as I can. The only way you can really connect is to tell the truth. That’s my motto.
What are your main challenges as an artist currently?
Due to the pandemic, it’s become really hard to stay inspired, and creative, but I’ve found a way to be creative in a different way with my TeaTalks I create on my instagram story. This time has shown me that I can be multi dimensional and share my other passions. I love sharing herbal healing recipes with the public.
What is your proudest moment so far?
In the beginning of 2020, I performed at Schubas Tavern, and Emporium. I felt like that broke a milestone for me because they were venues I ALWAYS wanted to perform at. I also dropped a single this year and it’s been doing very well. I’m managing myself at the moment, but my team and I did this ourselves. So all of these accomplishments have made me very PROUD.
If you could be a performer in any era, what would it be and why?
The 90s! I feel Artist development, and music was handled very differently as far as the process, and i would love for that to be prominent in the music industry again.
If you had to do something else (outside of the music industry), what would it be?
I would work in Sound Design for animation as well as voice acting.
What is a quote or phrase that you try to live by? Why?
“You’re doing the best you can. You don’t have to have it all figured out right now”
It’s really easy to be hard on yourself and feel as if you’re not doing everything you wish. The pressure to be everything you want in life in your 20s can bring on tons of anxiety. Whenever i’m feeling restless, I always tell myself those words. Because we are living through a pandemic. It’s cruel to be tough on yourself during this sensitive time.
Tell us something that you’re doing now and are excited about.
My Tea Talk. I’ve always had a passion for herbs and natural healing, and wanted to just share my love and knowledge to the public. So i’ve been publicly showing my Tea recipes which could possibly help someone. It’s been really fun and exciting.
What should we expect from you in 2020?
Honestly, I’m taking this time to really become who I wish to be. As an artist and a Person. I’m refining my brand and image. So just expect a more authentic version of me. I plan to show this through my music and content releases
