Able Grey is a rising Producer and DJ from Chicago. Blending indie dance electronica and future bass, he offers a unique but familiar sound. His live sets seamlessly blend multiple genres of music while still collectively boosting his style in a way you wouldn’t expect. Having created tons of unofficial and unreleased edits, bootlegs, mashups, and remixes, Able Grey truly gives a unique show you don’t want to miss.
With his releases gaining support from KSHMR, Nicky Romero, Showtek, Brooks, CloudKid, and Adventure Time (yes, Adventure Time), Able Grey is an artist you definitely want to pay attention to.
What genre would you describe yourself as? Why?
A blend between Future Bass and Inide-Electronica with a splash of mid-tempo. My songs can go many ways within these ‘created’ genres, but I still think my sound design and compositions create a sound that is mine while being able to encompass these different moods.
Tell us something that you’re doing now and are excited about.
I am always working on and polishing up music. So much so that the music I’m making now won’t be heard for a while due to release schedules. I also have been working on a ton of edits, mashups, and remixes for my live shows. Just more ways to make an original show become more my own while still touching elements people love.
What artists influence you/do you look up to?
Too many to count or list haha. I dive into the heavier sides of music as well as the lighter all the time depending on mood and settings. Curse of being a DJ is always having countless catalogs of music for different occasions.
What is your proudest moment so far? (blogged/signed/etc..)
My proudest moment so far is actually a few. The first has to be being added to KSHMR’s playlist on Spotify the other day. He is such an icon to me, as I’m sure he is to many other producers as well. I guarantee his sample packs are the most downloaded of all time; and rightfully so. The second would be signing to Careless Records and seeing my songs take off. Having someone wanting you on a label is amazing. Finally felt like I wasn’t wasting my time with what I loved and that other people enjoyed my music enough to believe in me.
What DAW do you use?
I use Ableton Live 9 and 10. I also have been known to use Logic but that is mainly for tracking vocals.
What are some of your favorite plug-ins?
Serum, Exhale and Fabfilter are the one’s I use the most.
What is something you cannot leave home without (besides keys, phone, wallet)?
Oh man…this gets tricky cause I’m the kind of person who always likes to be prepared. The classic USB, a hat, some napkins or tissues (cause you never know what could get spilled). If I’m not just going out for the night I’ll usually have a bag with me with an external battery (or 2), iPad for Netflix on the go, maybe my Nintendo Switch, a pen, notebook, a snack, chapstick, etc…
Long days and nights in entertainment can take quite a toll on your body. How do you stay healthy?
I take supplements everyday. I’d like to eat more healthy, but food is just too good haha. I also workout 3 times a week, and go on hikes occasionally with friends. Outside of gigs I’m usually a hermit. Helps me focus on music more and also have more personal time….gotta keep the mental health game up too.
If you had to do something else (outside of music), what would it be?
Film. All throughout my life I was obsessed with videography. It’s a main chunk of my degree too.
What was your favorite show that you’ve played?
I had the chance to play at The Mid before it closed (RIP). I remember going to there for so many shows and always dreamed of being on its stage. I closed out for KRANE and Grandtheft. It was beyond surreal.
What’s your current favorite show (tv/Netflix/etc…) worth binging?
I watch so so much Netflix that it may be an addiction haha. Currently Dark Season 2 just came out so I’m making my way thru that. Amazing show if you haven’t watched it.
What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you while DJing?
Besides having drinks spilled on me and the equiptment? Probably when I had a girl throw her friends business card to me while I was playing. Hell of a throw to be honest.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what album would you have with you?
This is a tough one. If I could do a collection of The M Machine Metropolis pt. I and II and their OWSLA After Dark mix I’d be set.
What is something that makes you stand out as an artist?
I would say within my music it’s the way I blend certain sounds and genres that may not go together usually. With my shows it would be my live edits, remixes, and mashups. The way I make songs come together that you wouldn’t expect.
What is a quote or phrase that you try to live by? Why?
‘Sometimes it be how it is’ has been making its way into my mindset more. If anything it’s just a way for me to remember to not get caught up on things that are out of your control.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you so much to whoever took the time to read this and peer into my mind a little. I love each and every one of you.
